Jean Mixon, 81, of Dixie, passed away on March 18, 2016, at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. She was born on May 2, 1934, to Chester Arthur and Luena Gertrude Griffith in Jayess, MS. From an early age, she was an active member of Dixie Baptist Church where she met her husband of 49 years, “Red” Mixon. They traveled extensively while her husband served in the Air Force and during his time of service, she gave birth to four children. Upon Mr. Mixon’s retirement, the family moved back to Hattiesburg and Mrs. Mixon worked at Woolsworth downtown. Shortly thereafter, they took over the family gas station and grocery business from Mr. Mixon’s parents. They also opened another grocery store in Palmer’s Crossing. Mrs. Mixon later closed the Mixon’s Catfish House, which had also been taken over from her in-laws, and reopened it as Happy Times Daycare. Mrs. Mixon retired upon the sudden death of her husband in 1999. She continued her care for children in the church nursery.
Mrs. Mixon is preceded in death by her husband, her parents; one son, Dwain; and two grandsons: Christopher and Chad. She is survived by two daughters: Zandra Myers (Archie) and Sharon Kelly (Phil); a son, Mike Mixon: fourteen grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Sunday, March 20, from 1-3pm, at Forrest Funeral Home, with the service to follow at 3:00 in Forrest Chapel. Interment will be at Dixie Church Cemetery. Mrs. Mixon’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers and her great-grandsons will serve as honorary pall bearers.
