Sandra Gilbreath Hogue, 68, of Hattiesburg, MS, peacefully went home to heaven at 3:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2017, after a courageous four-year battle with breast cancer. Herr husband and children were by her side.
A memorial celebration of her life will be held at 11:000 a.m. Saturday, May 6, at Forrest Funeral Home, 1258 Richburg Rd., Hattiesburg, MS (601-264-1816), with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m.
Sandra was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and in-law, roles she dearly loved. Her family was the joy of her life and she is missed by all who knew her.
A natural beauty, she was modest and unassuming, unlikely to draw attention to herself, instead focusing on others throughout her life. At the last, she had no fear of death, concerned only about the losses of those she left behind.
At midlife, after staying home to raise her two daughters to the teen years, she enrolled in the nursing program at Hinds Community College. A great student, she graduated Summa Cum Laude, with highest honors, and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa academic honor society. For 20 years, she was a caring nurse who loved her patients and was loved in return.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Larry Hogue of Hattiesburg, and two daughters, Laura Hogue Butler (Thomas) of Wiggins and Lisa Hogue Brown (Nicholas) of Little Rock, AR. Her grandchildren, the light of her life, are Hayden Butler (17) and John Thomas Butler (12) of Wiggins, and Alexander Brantley Brown (2) of Little Rock. Survivors include her mother, Vera Marshall, of Knoxville, TN, and brothers Herbert Gilbreath and Noel Gilbreath (Karen) of Knoxville, and sister Debra Carwile of Wixom, MI. Surviving her, too, are in-laws Don and Carol Appler of Elizabethtown, KY, and nine nieces and nephews. Her father Herbert Harlan Gilbreath of Jackson, MS, is deceased.
Her family is grateful for the care given her by oncologist Dr. Bo Hrom and nurse Michele Loftin, and the staff and nurses of the Cancer Center in Hattiesburg. Sincere gratitude is also expressed to the caring nurses and staff of Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg and Stone County Hospital in Wiggins, and home health nurse Melissa Shoemaker of Sumrall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her honor to a favorite charity, especially those for children.
